Kirtan Vancouver is a community dedicated to bringing people together through Kirtan and Bhakti Yoga.
Our organization is engaged in serving the community through a variety of Kirtan events, seminars, retreats and training intensives. Some take place frequently at fixed locations and others are organized upon request or occasion. If you'd like us to bring Kirtan to your event, you're welcome to email us at firstname.lastname@example.org and we'll try our best to make it happen! Listed below are many of the regular gatherings we host. Click on a banner to see more details. To see what we have coming up in the near future, check out our Events page.
EnChant: Mantra Meditation
Where: Unity Yoga Teahouse
EnChant is a bi-weekly community gathering of open-minded souls for call and response chanting, also known as Kirtan.
The practice of Kirtan, or Mantra Meditation, is a type of yoga which bestows many mind-calming benefits. For many, the practice has a powerful heart-opening effect and it is best understood through direct experience. Our voices are accompanied by traditional instruments such as the Harmonium, Mridanga (drum), and Kartals (hand cymbals).
Everyone is encouraged to participate at the level they feel comfortable. Although many participants prefer floor seating on the cushions provided, chairs are also available on site.
Doors open at 6pm with herbal tea and cookies and we begin Kirtan at 6:30. A delicious plant-based meal is served afterwards to conclude the evening.
The event is by donation and no one will be turned away for lack of funds. Volunteer opportunities may be available.
Kirtan for the People
Where: One Yoga for the People Vancouver
Kirtan Vancouver and One Yoga For the People would like to present to you an evening of sacred chants and mantra meditation. Please come join us with your hearts and voices so that we may create an uplifting energy of love and grace through Kirtan!
The event is by donation and no one will be turned away for lack of funds.
Cushions will be provided and you can bring a reusable water bottle, otherwise just bring yourself and some friends if you like!
Kirtan Training Course
Frequency: Couple times a year - once a week for 9 weeks
Where: TBA for each series
Development in the practice of kirtan in our personal lives does not depend on becoming musically proficient. In fact, musical ability is not required at all. Simply the act of chanting from the heart yields great results in Bhakti Yoga. Nonetheless, one’s ability to lead in kirtan can be greatly enhanced by studying the moods and techniques of music and voice.
This Kirtan Training will introduce basic skills for voice, harmonium, kartals and mridanga (drum). The intention will be to understand the roles of each instrument and how they cooperate to create different moods while chanting. Special focus will also be given to the history of kirtan and the philosophy of Bhakti Yoga, with emphasis on the ancient sanskrit texts of the Bhagavad Gita.
Please send us an email if you are interested in Kirtan Training. Letting us know with an email to email@example.com that you are interested does not oblige you to sign up for the class. When the class is finalized, we will inform you of the dates and timing. As this is a pilot project, the class size will be small and space will be limited.
Kirtan at Yoga Studios
If you have a Yoga Studio or are hosting a Yoga Teacher Training and would like to have a Kirtan Session or a talk on Bhakti Yoga Philosophy, we can come and facilitate this for you upon request.
Bhakti Immersion Retreat
Where: TBA based on venue availability
Once a year, we gather for a day retreat to cleanse the mind and connect with the soul. We feature mantra meditation, yoga, bhakti-centered workshops and more all hosted by wonderfully experienced Bhakti Yogis. We generally try to find a tranquil venue to help us leave our busy city environment behind and focus on the present. It's an incredible opportunity to recharge your spiritual batteries in a peaceful oasis!
Vegan meals and snacks prepared by our Bhakti Chefs are included throughout the day.
Bhagavad Gita: Stories and Truths about Transcendence
Frequency: Couple series every year (4-5 sessions once a week)
The Bhagavad Gita is universally renowned as the jewel of India’s spiritual wisdom. It is one of the greatest philosophical and spiritual dialogues in the history of the world. Not only is it a source of great knowledge and wisdom, but it expresses the richness of a spiritual culture that once flourished in humanity. Through the pages of the Bhagavad Gita we become acquainted with the elevated qualities of enlightened sages and the means to discover the same within ourselves.
